Can you feel the excitement!!!     Testimonials

Please welcome April Perry, Co-Founder of Mind Organization for Moms, which has been growing as a featured program on The Power of Moms since January of 2009.

Happy-Go-Baby: First, when did you know that you wanted to start Mind Organization for Moms?

April Perry: I have been a “planner person” since I was in middle school, and I’ve always loved organizing my time, setting goals, and accomplishing tasks related to my highest priorities.  Even though I considered myself to be a very organized person, I never felt “stress free” when it came to working on my to-do list.

When I read David Allen’s book Getting Things Done, it was like a light bulb went on.  My productivity tripled and my stress level was cut in half.  I knew I had to figure out a way to make the process easy for moms to implement (the book is excellent, but it’s written with a business perspective, and I felt moms needed to see how the brilliant ideas there could easily transfer over to the work we do in our homes and families).

I started writing articles and recording podcasts on the subject, and the ideas really caught on with the moms in our web community.  Hundreds (and probably near thousands) of hours later, we have a powerful program that’s changing mothers’ lives for the better.

Happy-Go-Baby: We're very interested in knowing how you came up with this idea.  What was your path of development?

April Perry:  The ideas in Mind Organization for Moms are mostly from David Allen.  I’ve put together my own flow chart, diagrams, step-by-step instructions, examples, etc., but the basic framework is directly from Getting Things Done.  I contacted his office to let them know what I was doing, and they said as long as I didn’t claim to be endorsed by them or officially associated with the, I could reference his work and write my own program based on his ideas.  I do guest-post on David Allen’s “GTD Times” blog, which has been a great experience.

Our Mind Organization for Moms program has gone through four different phases.  It started as a long essay, then became a 50-page eBook with accompanying podcasts, and then when I got feedback from women using the program, I worked with my business partner Saren, her husband Jared, and my husband, Eric, to make it very streamlined and easy to understand.  It’s been a group project, and it will continue to grow and evolve as more people use it.

We have a Sharing Center up on our site where moms can show us how they implement the program, and we’re adding forums, as well.  It’s so exciting to see how it’s growing!

Happy-Go-Baby: What are some of your favorite experiences so far since Mind Organization for Moms?

April Perry:  Definitely receiving the emails from moms whose lives are changing.  When I hear how mothers are enjoying their families and balancing their heavy demands with less stress, I just know that growing this organization is what I’m supposed to be doing.

Happy-Go-Baby: Tell us a bit about any special projects?

April Perry:  We’re working on a M.O.M. Coaching program right now, where we can have our Power of Moms Trainers do coaching from all over the country (and the world).  They can be available to go into moms’ homes to help them set up their system, as well as provide support through email and Skype.  I have three coaches right now who are helping me set up the program, and it’s so exciting!

There are honestly about 30 exciting projects going on right now within M.O.M. and The Power of Moms, in general. Our board is growing each week as talented, devoted mothers step on to help us expand our impact.  I sit down at the computer for a few hours each day and work like crazy to move all these things forward, alongside my great business partner, Saren.  I strongly encourage anyone who reads this interview to get on The Power of Moms and sign up for our free membership.  It’s such an exciting place to be!

Happy-Go-Baby: Are there any books, programs, or sites you might recommend that assisted you?

April Perry:  I have a starter list on my blogand there are some great ones listed in our Sharing Center.  I’ll be putting more on the site soon.

Happy-Go-Baby: What do you do outside the world of Mind Organization for Moms Program?

April Perry: I am a mother to four children, ages 3-11 (who are anxious to get to the swimming pool right now, so I told them I’d only be 10 more minutes!).  I also do training at our Power of Moms Retreats, write for our site (and guest posts in other online communities), and co-direct our board of 20+ moms.  Building a strong marriage and participating in my church are also very important to me.

Happy-Go-Baby: What message can you give to other parents that may feel overwhelmed with the life of parenting?

April Perry: I can TOTALLY relate.  It is overwhelming sometimes, but there are specific tools, ideas, and habits that can make it a fabulous, enjoyable experience.  I honestly love being a mother.  It’s my favorite job in the whole world, but that’s because I’ve learned from great mentors.  The Power of Moms is where we gather deliberate mothers so we can all teach each other.  I’m learning new things every day.

Happy-Go-Baby: If you had to do it all over, what would you do differently?

April Perry: I would worry less.  I’m kind of a perfectionist, and I worry when I don’t do everything just the way I imagine it in my mind.  I’m learning to let go of that perfectionism and just do the best I can—in my business and in my family.

Happy-Go-Baby: What kinds of skills do you think a person needs to have to do your Program?

April Perry: If you can follow step-by-step instructions and ask questions when you’re stuck, you can do this!

Happy-Go-Baby:  Even though your program is geared towards women are there any men or possibly teenagers that have shown interest?

April Perry: Yes!  We’ve got a “Mind Organization for Dads” in the works, and my daughter (who is 11) is working on a version for kids.  I don’t know when these will launch, but the principles apply to all people, so I’m excited to grow the program.

Happy-Go-Baby:  Speaking of teenagers…How great would your program be for teens and how much easier life would be for them as they grow into adulthood, have you considered marketing to young adults?

April Perry: I would LOVE to do a college version.  I think there are some people who are marketing GTD to teens, and I’d love to meet up with them to see how our organizations could overlap.  That’s on my “someday” list.

Happy-Go-Baby: Has your life made a dramatic change in the last few years, and if so, can you describe it?

April Perry: I’ve never had so much to do—but I’ve also never felt this same passion for life.  The Power of Moms has kind of “exploded” in the past few months, and with that comes a lot of extra work.  It’s exciting, though, and I just appreciate being a part of an organization where I truly feel like I’m working with my best friends all day long.  It’s been magical.

Happy-Go-Baby: Can you give me some examples of ups and downs you have encountered or faced with?

April Perry: My life is FULL of ups and downs!  Some days I feel like I’m on top of the world—balancing work and family well, keeping with my routines, accomplishing my most important tasks . . . but then something will throw a wrench into my life, or I’ll try to do too many projects, or I’ll try to get by on too little sleep, and then I just start crying a lot to my husband.

He’s my biggest supporter.  He knows that this is what I need to be doing, so he and my children work with me to make The Power of Moms and Mind Organization for Moms work.  This is a family effort.  This is a team effort.  It’s amazing to see thousands of moms gathering to our community and applying the ideas to their families.  It’s also incredibly hard, but hard things are good.  I’m learning and growing every day, and I hope to help others to do the same.

Happy-Go-Baby: Great information!! Thank you so much April for this interview.  It was truly a pleasure!
